Save energy through better control
Why keep a spare room as warm as the living room all evening? Smart radiator valves let you choose different temperatures and schedules across your home, helping reduce unnecessary heating while keeping the spaces you use comfortable.
Schedule the rooms you use first, ready for the start of your day.
Choose lower scheduled temperatures in rooms that are not being used.
Relax in a warm living room while keeping bedrooms at their own settings.
Savings depend on your property, existing controls, settings and heating habits. Scheduled room control is included; occupancy sensors are optional extras.
Explore smart heating
A cosy living room. A cooler bedroom. See how room-by-room control lets your heating fit the way you live.
Try a routine and watch the home respond.
An example daily schedule
These are scheduled target temperatures, not live temperature readings. Rooms warm gradually; start times are adjusted to suit your home. The hallway stays at 16°C in this example. Choose a routine or move a room slider to explore a different setting.
The living room is set to 20°C while the hallway has a lower target of 16°C.
Reduced motion is on. Use Next step for still scenes, or choose Play.
The amber glow marks the occupied room’s comfort request, not measured heat output. Room to room is a shortened example using compatible presence sensors and room heating controls. A 2°C reduction follows a configurable empty-room delay, not every brief movement. Presence detection should keep comfort settings while someone remains in the room. Actual warming takes time; suitable schedules can prepare rooms earlier. Settings and delays are tailored to your home and heating system. Potential savings depend on your property, usage and existing controls.
The sequence is shortened. Targets change straight away; actual room temperatures change gradually. Welcome Home uses an agreed phone-location boundary to start preparing the heating, with permission and compatible controls. It does not unlock your door.

Energy Saving Trust explains that heating controls can help avoid overheating. Whether smart controls save money depends on how you already use your heating.
Read Energy Saving Trust’s heating guidance ↗The bar compares four equally weighted rooms against an outdoor temperature of 10°C. It adds each target’s difference from 10°C; the marker represents all four targets at 20°C. This simplified heat-loss comparison is not a boiler-power reading, energy calculation or savings forecast. A warmer colour indicates a higher target, not proof the heating is currently running.
Actual demand and savings depend on property size, insulation, heat loss, system efficiency, existing controls, occupancy, schedule, weather and desired temperatures. Rooms differ in size and heat loss and exchange heat with each other. Standard controls with radiator valves can already provide different room temperatures. This example isolates the effect of the temperatures you choose; smart controls add convenient coordination and schedules. Heat pumps and other systems may need a different control approach.
A manufacturer-reported average
tado° reports this average among its users. Your saving depends on your home and how you already use the heating.
Manufacturer figures & sources below ↓A small temperature change
In our example with 10°C outside, that means 20% less heat loss from the affected room while it stays cooler. It is not a 20% saving on your whole heating bill.

£721.43illustrative room-heating costOne combined estimate, not separate savings added together. Presence reductions belong in Home settings; geofencing belongs in Away/Home timing. Neither adds an extra percentage.
10°C is an adjustable modelling assumption, not a UK annual weather average. Four equally weighted zones each represent a quarter of the home’s heat loss. Each week has seven nights, the selected Away periods and Home filling the remaining hours. Current and smart schedules use the same period lengths. No hour is counted twice.
For each period the model sums each room target minus the outdoor temperature and multiplies by weekly hours. It compares the smart total with the current-setup total and applies their ratio to annual room-heating cost. Lower settings must represent sustained periods, not brief movements between rooms.
The Monthly view shares the annual estimate equally across selected heating months. It is an average heating-month illustration, not a weather-based bill forecast: cold-month bills differ from mild-month bills. Unticked months show £0 for room heating in both cases. Hot water can still cost money in summer and is excluded. Changing selected months redistributes the annual budget; it does not reduce the annual cost entered.
This steady-state model does not predict measured temperatures, warm-up and cool-down times, heat moving between rooms, solar gains, boiler cycling, changing weather or heat-pump efficiency. Existing schedules may already save energy. A single current temperature per period approximates homes with different existing room settings; a fully switched-off period is not modelled.
Actual results depend on property size, insulation, heat loss, system efficiency, existing controls, occupancy, schedule, weather, temperatures and tariff. Device power, installation and subscriptions are excluded. Short reductions may save little or nothing. Choose comfortable settings suited to your household and system. If you do not know your room-heating cost, treat this as an example rather than a personal forecast.
Energy Saving Trust explains that heating controls can reduce unnecessary heating and savings depend on existing controls and habits. Read the UK heating-controls guidance ↗. This is our illustrative model, not an Energy Saving Trust calculator or a validated savings forecast.
These studies use different starting points. The short summary above uses tado°’s own reported user average of 22%; it is not an average across all brands or a room-zoning-only result.
Drayton cites BEAMA research reporting a 19% reduction in energy use from adding individual room control. This includes traditional thermostatic radiator valves as well as smart radiator thermostats, so it is not a saving exclusive to smart controls.

Drayton cites BEAMA research on upgrading basic heating controls to a smart system with separate room control. The figure covers the combined upgrade; the 19% room-control figure is not an extra saving to add on.

Resideo’s claim compares manual radiator valves and a mechanical thermostat with evohome zoning, an OpenTherm bridge and HR92 radiator controls. Its cited BEAMA test uses an end-terrace or semi-detached home.
Read Resideo’s claim and conditions ↗These are manufacturer-published potential savings, not guarantees or a like-for-like comparison between brands. Your home, existing controls, heating system and habits affect the result. The percentages are not added together or applied to the calculator above.

Our simple heat-loss model compares a room maintained at 20°C with the same room maintained at 18°C, with 10°C outside. The temperature gap falls from 10°C to 8°C: 20% less heat loss to outside under those fixed conditions. With 0°C outside, the same reduction would be 10%. These are model examples, not measured savings or a UK average.
A short setback may not let a room cool by the full 2°C. Actual bill savings also depend on how many rooms are reduced, for how long, heat moving between rooms, insulation and heating-system performance. The calculator combines your chosen temperatures and hours; this example adds no extra saving.
Energy Saving Trust says lowering a thermostat from 22°C to 21°C could save £120 a year in Great Britain. It does not give a universal 2°C figure here, so we have not simply doubled that amount. Keep occupied rooms comfortable for the people using them. Read the guidance ↗

Choose temperatures and schedules for selected rooms, helping reduce unnecessary heating. This starter package covers two radiators, with additional W600 heads at £60 each fitted during the same installation. A one-radiator setup can be quoted separately.
Your existing thermostat or programmer continues to control the boiler. This package controls selected radiators; it does not independently request heat from the boiler. A room can warm up only when the existing heating system is supplying hot water to its radiator.
We check how your thermostat, heating schedule and radiator valves work together before confirming suitability. Boiler relay installation and custom boiler-demand automations are not included.
Each W600 uses two AA alkaline batteries. Aqara’s up-to-two-year claim is based on Thread-mode testing; battery life in the proposed Zigbee setup varies with use. The hub requires external power.
No heating subscription is required for the listed Aqara controls. Compatible window sensors, occupancy sensors and separate room-temperature sensors are optional extras, quoted separately.
One smart head is needed per radiator, including when a room has multiple radiators. Suitable existing thermostatic valve bodies and hub coverage are required. Valve-body replacements and other additional work are quoted separately.
